On July 5, 2020, the German nursing profession underwent a significant reform with the introduction of a new generalist nursing education program. This program aims to provide comprehensive training for nurses and caregivers, enabling them to work effectively in various care settings.

The program, which began in April 2020, consists of two years of generalist education at the gfg Rostock. During this period, trainees learn alongside elderly, healthcare, and pediatric care professionals, receiving both theoretical and virtual training. In the third year, trainees can choose to specialize in nursing, elderly care, or pediatric care, or continue their generalist training as a nurse or caregiver.

According to the nursing profession reform law passed by the Bundestag in June 2017, the new generalist coaching is designed to provide trainees with the skills and knowledge necessary to work independently and make informed decisions in their roles. The program also offers flexible switching between different care professions, allowing trainees to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
