On Saturday, July 4, Bristol City suffered a crushing defeat to Cardiff City, marking the final nail in the coffin for manager Lee Johnson's four-year tenure at the club.
Johnson's dismissal was announced immediately after the match, with assistant boss Dean Holden stepping in to take charge on an interim basis.
According to a statement from the club, Johnson was 'relieved of his role as Bristol City Head Coach' and Holden will 'take over immediately in a caretaker capacity as the club look to appoint a successor.'
Chief Executive Mark Ashton acknowledged Johnson's significant contributions to the club, but emphasized that a change in management was necessary due to the team's poor results.
Ashton stated, 'We recognise the huge amount of work that Lee has put in over the last four-and-a-half years to move this club forward and we thank him for all his efforts.'
However, Ashton also noted that 'success in football is ultimately judged by results and league position and the Board believes that a change of management is needed now for Bristol City.'
The team's poor form has seen them go nine matches without a win, and they currently sit 12th on the EFL Championship standings with 55 points.
They will look to return to winning ways when they take on Hull City on Wednesday, July 8.
