July 5, 2020, marked a significant milestone for Jeff Bezos, as he surpassed his previous wealth record to become the world's richest person, with a net worth of nearly $172 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index.

Bezos' wealth has been fueled by his ownership of Amazon, which has seen a significant increase in online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic. The company's stock has soared 56% year to date, with Bezos owning roughly 57 million shares, or 12% of the company.

Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie, has also seen her wealth skyrocket, with a net worth of $57 billion, making her the 12th richest person in the world. Her wealth has increased by nearly $20 billion year to date, a 54% increase.

Amazon has faced criticism for employee safety and pay, but the company has responded by giving out more than $500 million as a 'Thank You bonus' to frontline workers who were with the company throughout the month of June.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Bezos' wealth.
