Published on July 5, 2020, Kenya has confirmed 389 new COVID-19 cases, marking a new high in the number of infections recorded since the outbreak of the disease in the country.
Health CS Mutahi Kagwe announced the new cases in a statement to newsrooms on Saturday, stating that the cases were confirmed after testing of 4,829 samples in the last 24 hours.
The new cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 7,577, with five more patients succumbing to the coronavirus disease, raising the number of fatalities recorded in the country to 159.
CS Kagwe warned that at the current rate of infection, the disease could overrun the country's healthcare facilities, emphasizing the need for the nation to renew its commitment to observing containment measures.
The positive cases are distributed across various counties, with Nairobi recording the highest number of cases at 248, followed by Kajiado, Kiambu, and Mombasa.
CS Kagwe's statement highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, 'From the statistics, it is indicative that we have lost too many lives already. We cannot afford to lose any more. We, must therefore, as a nation, renew our commitment to observing the containment measures, without which, this disease could very easily overrun our healthcare facilities.'
