Published on July 5, 2020, Mexico's coronavirus death toll has surpassed 30,000, with the country now holding the world's fifth-highest Covid-19 toll.

The health ministry reported a daily record of 6,914 new infections, bringing the total to 252,165, officials said.

However, the true number of fatalities and infections is thought to be much higher due to insufficient testing.

As the country continues to grapple with the pandemic, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is eager to restart the economy, with his government announcing a phased plan to lift restrictions in May.

Despite the reopening of some non-essential businesses in Mexico City, the capital, authorities have imposed a two-day suspension of non-essential business in parts of the city, citing concerns over the spread of the virus.

Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell warned that coronavirus deaths could rise if the country opens up its economy too soon, stating, 'As we're in an active epidemic, the risk is that as we try to reopen social activities… we may have more infections and the transmission could be maintained or increase.'
