Published on July 5, 2020, the government has taken steps to address the delays experienced by truck drivers at the Miritini testing center in Mombasa.

According to East African Community and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed, the delays were caused by the large number of drivers cleared by the port, while the testing facility could only attend to 100 drivers a day.

CS Mohammed has vowed to contact his Health counterpart, Mutahi Kagwe, to increase the testing capacity for drivers at the facility.

As part of the efforts to ease congestion, the government has announced plans to launch a Northern Corridor COVID-19 sensitization campaign from Mombasa to Malaba, which will run for the next 14 days.

Under the new arrangement, truck drivers will be tested at the Miritini center before embarking on their journeys, and will be issued with health certificates for COVID-19.

With the new measures in place, the government has assured that roadblock checks at Athi River will be removed, allowing drivers to travel from Mombasa to Malaba uninterrupted.

Truck drivers' representative Roman Waema has welcomed the move, stating that they will embark on a sensitization campaign for the safety of the drivers beginning Monday.
