On July 5, 2020, a new era in nursing education began in Germany with the introduction of generalist nursing education at gfg Rostock. This reform was made possible by the passage of the nursing profession reform law in June 2017.
The new education program allows students to train as nurses, care professionals, or specialize in elderly, health, or pediatric care. The first two years of education are taught collectively, with a focus on generalist training and practical experience. In the third year, students can choose to continue their generalist training or pursue a specialization.
One of the benefits of this new education program is that it allows for flexible switching between different professions in the care sector. Additionally, students who complete the program are eligible to work in other EU countries, and the profession of caregiver has been shortened to make it more accessible.
