On July 5, 2020, Kenyan journalist Yassin Juma was arrested by Ethiopian police while covering protests in the Oromia region.

The protests erupted following the killing of popular musician Hachalu Hundessa, who was shot dead in Addis Ababa on June 29, 2020.

According to reports, Juma's arrest is linked to his alleged close relationship with Hundessa, a fierce critic of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's administration.

Juma, a former employee of Kenya's NTV, is also alleged to have close ties with Oromo activist Jawar Mohammed, who owns the media house where the Kenyan journalist works.

Prior to his killing, Hundessa had reportedly been receiving death threats.

Notably, Juma was previously arrested in 2016 by Kenya's Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) after he blogged about the attack on the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) El Adde base by al-Shabaab militants.
