Published on July 5, 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to Kenya and the world at large. The crisis has highlighted the need for a rethink of global realities, particularly in the face of de-bordering unknowns.

While some states have handled the two phases of crisis management - containment and recovery - effectively, others have struggled to transition from one phase to the next. Kenya, for instance, has been grappling with the aftermath of the pandemic, seeking to stimulate its national economy and strengthen social bonds.

As the world realigns and power shifts, Kenya must rethink its political economy to survive and thrive. The country cannot ignore the realities of global realignment, including the blame game played by the US and China, which have ignored warnings of the virus and are now pointing fingers at each other.

Kenya needs fresh 'grand strategists' with ingenious minds to navigate this new landscape. The country must adopt a 'common touch' and avoid uncivil confrontations with its citizens. By doing so, Kenya can ensure that its recovery efforts are effective and sustainable.
