As India battles the coronavirus pandemic, a 49-year-old businessman from Pune has taken an unusual approach to stay safe: wearing a gold face mask.

Shankar Kurhade, a businessman from the western city of Pune, said he paid about Sh400,000 ($4,000) for the bespoke gold face mask, which weighs 60 grams and took craftsmen eight days to make.

"It is a thin mask and has tiny pores that is helping me to breathe," Kurhade said.

While he is not sure if the gold mask will be effective in protecting him from a coronavirus infection, Kurhade is taking other precautions when going out.

India has made face masks mandatory in public places in a bid to control the spread of the virus, which has around 650,000 confirmed cases and more than 18,600 fatalities.
