On July 4, 2020, Norwich City manager Daniel Farke acknowledged that his team's chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League are all but over.
The admission came after Leandro Trossard scored the only goal in Brighton & Hove Albion's 1-0 win at Carrow Road, leaving Norwich seven points from safety with five matches remaining.
Farke's team has lost all five games since the coronavirus hiatus, and their chances of survival are further complicated by upcoming matches against Chelsea and Manchester City.
"It was more or less our last chance to get back in the mix and we are disappointed," Farke said.
"The story of our game was the story of our season, we didn’t find the cutting edge and we then make a big mistake," he added.
Farke's decision to drop Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell, who had scored 68 percent of his team's goals this season, was criticized by some Norwich fans.
However, Pukki had not scored in 10 games dating back to January, and Farke's move was an attempt to shake things up.
Despite their best efforts, Norwich were unable to find the back of the net, and Trossard's goal in the 25th minute proved to be the decisive blow.
Brighton's win puts them nine points clear of the relegation zone, and their chances of avoiding the drop are looking increasingly strong.
