On the 100th day of lockdown, South Africa has reopened restaurants and casinos, but the number of COVID-19 infections continues to rise, with 177,124 cases and 2,952 deaths reported.

Restaurants and casinos have been allowed to reopen since Monday as part of a phased and gradual relaxation of the restrictions, but business remains slow, with some restaurants operating at just 25 percent of pre-lockdown levels.

At Verdicchio Restaurant and Wine Cellar in Fourways, Johannesburg, IT expert Kennedy Machiwana celebrated his 35th birthday alone, observing social distancing rules.

"It feels a little weird" to have a meal without alcohol, Machiwana complained, as he poured himself a glass of water.

Restaurants are lobbying to have alcohol allowed again, as it accounts for a huge chunk of their revenues.

At Thava Indian restaurant, manager Vivin Varghese said the hospitality industry is "bleeding" from the virus fallout.

"People are still scared to come out," and those who do "are still mourning that there is no alcohol," Varghese said.

Montecasino's casino floor, which has over 30 restaurants, has seen only a few dozen gamblers trickle in, with guests required to have their temperature taken, wear a face mask, and sanitise their hands regularly.

Montecasino's chief operating officer Mike Page said the complex had initially been worried about a massive surge in customers, but has seen a slow and steady uptick in business instead.

Restaurants and casinos have upped their hygiene game, with tables disinfected before and after every client, and staff constantly sanitising themselves.

"We are trying (our) best to make sure that (customers) feel safe when they come and dine out with us," said Verdicchio Restaurant's manager Deran Els.
