Kenyan Journalist Yassin Juma Arrested in Ethiopia

On July 3, 2020, Kenyan journalist Yassin Juma was reportedly arrested in Ethiopia for covering the protests that erupted in Oromoo following the killing of musician Hachalu Hundessa.

According to reports, Hundessa, who was perceived as an activist for the Oromo ethnic group, was shot dead while driving in Adis Ababa on Monday.

Since the protests erupted, 81 people have been killed, and the reason behind Hundessa's killing remains unclear, with the deceased having apparently been receiving death threats.

Yassin Juma was allegedly arrested at the residence of Ethiopian activist Jawar Mohammed, a fierce critic of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Jawar Mohammed has a history of clashing with the authorities, having been arrested in 2016 by the Anti Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) after he blogged about the Al Shabaab attack on the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) El Adde base.
