As I reflect on my own life, I'm reminded of the countless times I've put off enjoying the things I've saved for special occasions. It's a habit that's not unique to me, but one that many of us share.

My eight-year-old daughter recently pointed out that I was dressed up, ready to go out, when I told her I was 'nowhere.' She was right, of course – I was wearing something more flattering than my usual tracksuit bottoms, and I had even put on a bit of makeup. It was a small act of self-care, but one that made me realize how often I put off enjoying the little things in life.

Her observation was triggered by a social media post from a friend, who had shared a beautiful teapot set that she had inherited from her mother. The teapot and its matching cups and saucers had been displayed proudly on the top shelf of the cupboard in their living room, but never used. It was a reminder that sometimes, we save things for special occasions, but end up not using them at all.

My daughter's story resonated with me, and I realized that I'm not alone in this habit. We often save things for the future, thinking that we'll use them when the time is right, but the truth is, that time may never come.

As I looked around my kitchen, I saw a set of ceramic containers that I had bought years ago, but never used. They were lovely, and every friend or relative who saw them admired them, but I had never filled them with their intended contents – sugar, coffee, and tea. It was a reminder that sometimes, we need to break free from the illusion of waiting for the perfect moment, and start enjoying the things we have right now.

It's a lesson that's especially relevant in today's world, where we're constantly reminded of the fragility of life. We've all heard people vow to live their lives differently once the pandemic is over, but the truth is, we can start making changes now. We can start enjoying the little things in life, and not wait for the perfect moment.

So, let's break free from the illusion of waiting, and start living life to the fullest. Let's unlock that cabinet and bring out those expensive plates and cups we've been saving for special occasions. Let's enjoy them with our families, and not wait for the perfect moment that may never come.
