On July 4, 2020, Kenyan journalist Yassin Juma was arrested in Ethiopia's Oromia region while covering protests that erupted after the death of musician Hachalu Hundessa.

Hundessa, a prominent Oromo activist, was shot dead while driving in Adis Ababa on Monday, leading to widespread unrest that has claimed close to 80 lives.

Reports indicate that Juma was arrested due to his close relationship with Hundessa, who had openly criticized Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.

Juma also has close ties with Oromo activist Jawar Mohammed, with whom he worked at Jawar's media house in Addis Ababa prior to his arrest.

Shabiki reports that Juma's arrest has sparked concerns about the safety of journalists in Ethiopia.
