On July 3, 2020, Raila Odinga's elder brother, Oburu Odinga, revealed that those close to the ODM leader were planning to push him to replace President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022, even if it meant serving for just one term.

According to Oburu, Raila's allies believe he is still fit and capable to lead Kenya and that the handshake with President Kenyatta and the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) will pave the way for him to return to State House.

Oburu's sentiments were supported by ODM key members who sought anonymity, stating that it would be advantageous to have Odinga as president for one term, and two terms if possible.

They argued that as the single largest party after Jubilee, ODM stands a better chance to take over the mantle now that they have not been in power, unlike their friends.

Oburu also compared Raila to the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who became president at over 70 years of age.

However, Raila's personal assistant declined to comment on Oburu's statement, but reports indicate that on June 23, 2020, ODM backed the idea of having Raila as its presidential candidate in 2022.
