On July 4, 2020, police in Kenya arrested a 48-year-old teacher, David Ogeisia Migosi, in Likuyani, Trans Nzoia county, in connection with a string of car thefts in the South and North Rift regions.
According to police, Migosi, a teacher at St. Columbans Secondary School, was the mastermind behind the car thefts and was found in possession of 17 fake logbooks when he was arrested.
During a raid on his hideout, police also arrested two other accomplices, 38-year-old Asman Memba Bakari and 34-year-old Jeremiah Yego Kiptoo.
Seven vehicles were found at the hideout, along with suspected fake registration number plates, chassis number stickers, sale agreements, check book, and dismantled number plates.
Police had been investigating the case since mid-June, after receiving numerous reports of stolen vehicles.
On June 17, detectives recovered five other vehicles that had been stolen, and three suspects were arrested in possession of three of the vehicles.
The other two vehicles were found at a car wash in Kiminini and in Matunda.
Police have warned the public to be cautious of fake registration plates being used to sell stolen vehicles.
"The gang which targets parked and unsecured motor vehicles is believed to be using fake registration plates before selling them to unsuspecting buyers, and the DCI hereby cautions the public of the same," police stated.
