On the heels of completing the largest Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the region, Murang'a County has now embarked on a new ambitious project - the construction of a state-of-the-art cancer hospital. The hospital, which is expected to be ready by December 2020, will be a seven-storey facility with over 300 beds equipped with modern equipment to diagnose early stages of cancer.

According to Governor Mwangi Wairia, the hospital will offer in-patient cancer services, a rare offering in the region. Currently, most health facilities in the area offer outpatient cancer services, which are expensive and inaccessible to patients from poor families. The new hospital will change this narrative, providing affordable and accessible cancer treatment to the community.

The governor further revealed that the county government has already partnered with Spanish medical facilities to provide training for oncologists. The employment of oncologists will be done soonest possible, and they will be taken to India and Spain for further training. The county government will also tender for equipment from next month to prepare early for the commissioning of the hospital.

Notably, Murang'a County has been focusing on matters of health in the recent past, with the ICU and Cancer Centre being the latest additions to the county's healthcare infrastructure. The county is also set to complete an orthopedic facility in Gatanga.
