The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has taken a significant step in ensuring public safety by revoking the license of a gas plant found to have contravened the law on multiple occasions.

On June 25, 2020, EPRA carried out an enforcement operation at the plant located off Mombasa Road at Mavoko, in Machakos County, where the holder of the license, Swift Energy Distributors Limited, was found in breach of the Petroleum (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) Regulations, 2019.

According to EPRA, the company has failed to comply with the law on three other occasions, and substandard LPG gas cylinders are known to cause fires and loss of life.

EPRA Director-General Pavel Oimeke explained in a letter that the authority has no intention of withdrawing the case against the company, citing multiple breaches of the terms and conditions of the license issued to the accused and the Petroleum Act, 2019.

It is worth noting that the company had requested EPRA to withdraw charges against four suspects accused of refilling gas cylinders without consent of brand owners in January 2020, but the request was declined due to the company's non-compliance.
