On Friday, July 3, 2020, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a significant breakthrough in their efforts to combat car theft in the Western region. The team, led by the DCI, arrested a 48-year-old man who has been at the helm of a notorious car theft syndicate.
The suspect, identified as Davis Oigesa Migosi, a teacher at St Columbans Secondary School in Kitale, had been evading arrest since June 8, 2020, when his accomplices were apprehended. Migosi was found hiding in the Matunda area and was taken into custody alongside two other suspects, Asman Memba Bakari, 38, and Jeremiah Yego Kiptoo, 34.
According to the DCI, the arrest of Migosi led to the recovery of seven more vehicles in the last three days. The operation also yielded a significant number of fake logbooks, an ignition system, and other items used in the commission of the crime.
The recovered vehicles include a Toyota Axio, a Toyota Hilux, a White Toyota Probox, a Toyota DX, a Toyota Premio, a Toyota Hiace, and an Isuzu D-MAX Pick Up. The DCI also recovered suspected fake registration number plates and chassis number stickers.
The DCI stated that it was still yet to recover more vehicles that have been stolen from members of the public. The three suspects are currently awaiting arraignment.
