Kenyan Politician's Comments on Teenage Pregnancy Spark Debate ¶
Published on July 4, 2020, Machakos Woman Rep Joyce Kamene's comments on teenage pregnancy have sparked a heated debate in Kenya.
According to Kamene, the surge in teenage pregnancy can be attributed to the seductive behavior of young girls. She urged school girls to tone down on provocative behaviors that make their male counterparts thirsty for them.
"Girls should stop using vulgar language in their conversations in the presence of male counterparts. Exhibiting seductive behaviors makes them look like they are ripe for intercourse yet this is not true," Kamene said during a speech in Mlolongo on June 4.
Many Kenyans have since rallied behind Kamene's sentiments, noting that provocative behavior is rampant among teenagers and puts men into the temptation of approaching them.
