On July 3, 2020, an extraordinary prosecutor was appointed to examine criminal complaints made against Switzerland's attorney-general Michael Lauber and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Stefan Keller, president of the country's Supreme Court and the Administrative Tribunal of the Canton of Obwalden, will investigate the complaints, which target Lauber and Infantino, as well as other individuals.
The complaints were made in response to allegations of secret meetings between Lauber and Infantino, which were first raised in May by a Swiss parliamentary commission.
Lauber was suspected of violating his duties of office by meeting Infantino on three occasions in 2016 and 2017.
Infantino has defended the meetings, calling them 'perfectly legitimate' and 'perfectly legal', and stating that they were part of his fiduciary duties as FIFA president.
FIFA has welcomed the decision to investigate the complaints, stating that it has been fully cooperating with the authorities and will continue to do so.
