On July 1, 2020, a Kenyan court handed down a life sentence to a police officer found guilty of raping a pregnant woman who had gone to report a case at Lamu Police Station.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), Rodgers Ouma, 28, was convicted of rape and abuse of his position of authority as a police officer.
As the court ruled, Ouma lured the 26-year-old victim to his house at Langoni Police Lines, where he sexually assaulted her. The victim had gone to the police station on December 8th, 2019, to report that her husband was trying to force her to take abortion pills.
After filing the report, the victim returned home around 8 pm, but Ouma stopped her and offered to help her solve the matter. He took advantage of the situation to sexually abuse her.
As part of his sentence, Ouma will also serve 10 years for abuse of authority and pay Ksh. 400,000 damages to the victim.
