On June 21, 100 traders in Busia town were evicted from their land, with their business structures' windows and doors removed. However, the High Court in Busia has since intervened, issuing a temporary reprieve.
According to court documents, Justice Anne Amollo of the Environment and Land Court has barred private developers from interfering with the land, where the traders were allocated in 1995 by the defunct local authority. The court has also ordered that the traders' stalls should not be demolished.
The court has allowed the traders to use the land in Busia town for any purpose until the cases filed before Justice Amollo are heard and determined. The judge has scheduled an inter parties hearing for July 16.
The traders, who have been paying land rates to the county government annually, are seeking justice for their eviction. The case is ongoing.
