The Kenyan Cabinet has approved plans to take over the Gilgil Mental Hospital from the county government, following a request due to financial constraints.

According to Governor Lee Kinyanjui, the hospital, which serves hundreds of patients, had strained the county's budget.

He praised the medics at the facility for taking care of the patients, some of whom had been abandoned by their kin.

Located in Gilgil, the hospital is second to Nairobi's Mathari Hospital in terms of patient capacity.
