On July 3, 2020, a worrying report emerged from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) suggesting that over 2.7 million Kenyans may have been exposed to Covid-19.

The report, based on a survey of 2,535 donated blood samples collected from various parts of the country, indicated that antibodies in the blood samples could reveal whether an individual had been exposed to the virus, which could remain positive for several months.

According to the report, Nairobi County leads the list with 550,000 cases, accounting for 12.4% of the county's 4.5 million residents. Other regions with significant numbers of exposed individuals include Rift Valley (510,000), Nyanza (490,000), Central (370,000), Eastern (320,000), Western (220,000), and Coast (200,000).

Researchers warned that Kenyans need to be prepared for a significant number of Covid-19 cases, as the majority of the population may have been exposed to the virus.

The report also predicted that about 6,684 deaths will be recorded, with 26,093 people suffering from serious diseases.
