This archive report was first published on 3 July 2020.

On December 2019, a 26-year-old woman braved the rains and was on her way home after reporting that her husband was forcing her to take abortion pills to terminate an unwanted pregnancy at the Lamu Police Station.

It was then that she was stopped by someone who identified himself as Police Officer Rodgers Ouma from the Lamu station. He perused through her complaint, got her mobile number, and said he was willing to help.

The woman, trusting the officer as a person in authority, genuinely willing to follow the case, agreed to walk together as they were going in the same direction. He offered her shelter for the rains to subside.

However, instead of helping her, Ouma lured the woman to his house at Langoni Police Lines, where he raped her.

On July 3, 2020, the court found that the Prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Ouma to life imprisonment for rape. He will also serve 10 years for abuse of authority and pay Ksh. 400,000 damages to the victim, as per a statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).
