Published on July 3, 2020, Nation Media Group has embarked on a significant restructuring effort, resulting in the termination of at least 8 journalists.

According to a memo by CEO Stephen Gitagama, the media company aims to shift its focus from print advertising and physical reader copy to digital advertising, ePaper subscription, and content-driven reader revenue.

As part of this transformation, the company has identified the need to retain only those with relevant skills and expertise, leading to the reduction of its workforce effective July 3, 2020.

The list of terminated journalists includes Brenda Wanga, Debarl Inea, Sharon Baranga, Shaban Ulaya, Harith Salim, Lillian Kiarie, Silas Apollo, and Ken Mijungu.

Gitagama's memo outlined the company's objective to establish leadership in the mobile publishing landscape in Africa while exploring new revenue streams in the experiential and technology space.

“This will require retooling and resourcing the Group with relevant skill sets critical for success in the new business environment. Regrettably this will result in reduction of our workforce effective Friday July 3, 2020,” the memo read in part.

Kenyanbulletin.com has obtained a list of the terminated journalists, which includes several renowned reporters and anchors who have been with the media house for years.
