On July 3, 2020, the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) made the decision to cancel a second division match between UTA Arad and Petrolul Ploiesti due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

The match was scheduled to take place on Saturday, but five Petrolul players and the club's kit man were diagnosed with the coronavirus, prompting the FRF to take action.

According to reports, the infected players had been isolated, and local health authorities were working to determine how they contracted the virus.

Referee Robert Avram, who officiated at a top-flight match between Dinamo Bucharest and Sepsi OSK on June 21, has also tested positive for COVID-19.

The FRF announced that Avram would not officiate at any further matches this season.

With nearly 28,000 infections and 1,687 deaths, Romania continues to grapple with the impact of the pandemic.
