TV News Anchor Ken Mijungu Among Journalists Sacked at NTV Newsroom ¶
Published on July 3, 2020
TV news anchor Ken Mijungu has been sacked from Nation Media Group's NTV newsroom after seven years of service. The news comes days after the media house announced plans to lay off staff in its efforts to restructure the company.
According to a statement from the Kimathi Street-based media house, the coronavirus pandemic had caused a drastic drop in revenues, forcing the company to re-engineer its operations to accelerate its digital transformation.
As part of this process, the company said it would focus on resourcing people in new areas critical for the Group, but this would result in a reduction of its workforce.
Ken Mijungu, who took to social media to announce the news, thanked his fans for always staying tuned and thanked God for the opportunity.
"The axe fell at NTV newsroom and I was on its way. Seven years in those corridors summed up in a two-page letter of termination," Mijungu said in a tweet.
"We live to fight another day. Thanks to God, He remains the greatest, thank you for the opportunity and thank you for always staying tuned," he added.
Ken Mijungu is not the only journalist to be sacked from the media house. Others who have lost their jobs include Swahili anchor Nancy Onyancha and her husband Job Mwaura, who were both working at K24 TV.
Other employees who were fired include Ken Wariahe (Swahili anchor and editor), Isabella Kituri (anchor/Swahili editor), Caroline Wambui (acting managing editor), Shukri Wachu (education/crime reporter), Apollo Kamau (political reporter), Mercy Milanoi (business reporter), Joy Kiruki (features editor), Gloria Milimu (health reporter) and Kimani Githuku (reporter).
Others were features reporter Dennis Matara, sports anchor Tony Kwalanda as well as Fred Indimuli (news anchor/editor) among others.
