Kenya's Honey Gold Rush

Did you know that bee venom is seven times more costly than gold? A gram of bee venom costs KSh. 8,000, while a kilo of royal jelly fetches KSh. 42,000. The demand for honey is increasing globally, with a kilo retailing at KSh. 600 in Kenya.

With the right approach, beekeeping in Kenya can be a lucrative venture. Savannah Honey, a Kenyan social enterprise, has been empowering interested beekeepers for seven years through training, apiary management, and market access.

Published on July 3, 2020, Savannah Honey's services include:

  • Installation of Langstroth beehives and delivery
  • Colony division and monthly technical support
  • Market access for honey, royal jelly, propolis, bee venom, and bee pollen

Kenya's climate is ideal for beekeeping, with over 80% of the country's flora untapped nectar. However, poor beekeeping practices have led to a shortage of healthy honey, resulting in imports to meet demand.

According to Paul Kyalo, CEO of Savannah Honey, 'Bee-keeping in Kenya has been practiced traditionally for many years. However, only 20% of the country's honey production potential (estimated at 100,000 metric tonnes) has been tapped.'

Savannah Honey's market observations highlight the potential for beekeeping in Kenya:

  • The country lies within the best climatic pattern year-round, ideal for beekeeping
  • Farmers are looking for better and affordable ideas, with many idle lands available
  • Virgin tracts of land lie idle, flourishing with mature indigenous trees with class (A) nectar
  • Honey yields are low on traditional hives compared to modern Langstroth beehives, which also produce healthy honey

Why invest with Savannah Honey?

They offer a 6-year contract, providing training on modern beekeeping, provision of Langstroth beehives and equipment, apiary management, colony division, technical support, and market access for honey.
