As of this year, Nairobi motorists will no longer have to pay the daily KSh 200 rate for parking in the city centre. Instead, they will be charged by the hour, thanks to an automated system being introduced by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).
The system, which is 70% complete in select areas, will allow motorists to park for short periods without incurring the daily fee. The NMS Director-General, Mohammed Badi, has confirmed that the city has already integrated the facilities in areas such as Desai and Park roads.
According to Badi, the automated facilities will also be constructed along Waiyaki Way, Thika Road, Lang'ata road, and Thika road for public service vehicles. This move is expected to ease the burden on motorists who visit the CBD for short periods.
It's worth noting that the High Court suspended an order by City Hall to double fees in the CBD last year, citing that consumers were struggling to provide for basic amenities.
Meanwhile, the NMS is also planning to shut down 80 illegal dumpsites in the city. Badi has designated 35 official waste collection points and will work together with the National Youth Service to aid in the collection.
So far, the administration has identified 110 illegal sites and cleared 82 sites awaiting closure. Badi will also gazette legal solid waste dumpsite for public and private waste collection companies.
