July 3, 2020 - Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho expressed his frustration with the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in a Premier League match against Sheffield United on July 2, 2020.
Harry Kane thought he had levelled for Spurs after Sander Berge had given the hosts the lead, but VAR officials ruled that Lucas Moura had used his arm in the build-up, despite being shoved over and having the ball booted against him.
Jose Mourinho questioned the point of having referees on the pitch and said VAR was bad for the game, stating, 'I think the referee should always be the man on the pitch and the man in the office should support and assist.'
He also expressed his concern about the mental strength of his team, saying, 'We have to do better, we have to be mentally stronger to cope with what happened during the game.'
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, who has been a critic of VAR, felt wronged when his side had a goal ruled out in their 1-1 draw at Tottenham in November and sympathized with Mourinho's frustration.
