Published on July 3, 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought about a new reality, with the Ministry of Health leading the charge in curbing its spread.

Despite commendable efforts, complacency and reluctance to follow safety guidelines threaten to erode the gains made so far.

Public transport, in particular, has been identified as a high-risk area, with matatus and taxis being the primary means of transmission.

Health experts have emphasized the importance of reducing passenger numbers, providing hand sanitizer, and enforcing face mask use.

However, some matatu crews have ignored these guidelines, putting passengers and themselves at risk.

Health ministry officials have warned that those flouting the rules are breaking the law, but warnings alone may not be enough.

To protect everyone, health authorities and security personnel must step up enforcement and punish those who disregard the safety guidelines.
