On Thursday, Herman Cain, a former Republican presidential candidate and former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, announced on Twitter that he had been hospitalized with the coronavirus.
According to a statement posted on his Twitter account, Mr. Cain learned on Monday that he had tested positive for the virus and was hospitalized on Wednesday. He was 'resting comfortably in an Atlanta-area hospital' on Thursday.
Mr. Cain attended President Trump's indoor rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 20. The Trump campaign had disclosed earlier that six staff members who had been working on the rally had tested positive for the virus during a routine screening. Two members of the Secret Service also tested positive at the event.
Mr. Cain had described the rally and his experience in a video on his website, stating that he had worn a mask while in groups of people. However, he had also posted photographs on social media showing him without a mask and surrounded by people in the arena.
It is unclear how or where Mr. Cain contracted the coronavirus, according to the statement. Contact tracing was conducted after the Tulsa rally, but the Trump campaign declined to comment on Mr. Cain's medical information, stating that he did not meet with the president.
