On Wednesday, a 46-year-old man named Thomas Sereti and his wife Monica Kemunto found themselves in a desperate situation in Mombasa County. The couple, who have been struggling to make ends meet, were evicted from their rental house in Ukunda, Kwale County, due to unpaid rent.

Thomas Sereti, who lost his eyesight in 2013, blamed the Covid-19 pandemic for dealing his family a devastating blow. His wife, Monica Kemunto, could no longer find menial jobs to support the family, and their financial struggles worsened.

Speaking at our Mombasa office on Thursday, Mr. Sereti explained that his family's situation has been further complicated by his own health issues. He suffers from a kidney problem and has to care for a 13-year-old son who is confined to a wheelchair.

The family has been given temporary accommodation by a neighbour at Darling village in Ukunda, but they have no food. Mr. Sereti pleaded for help, saying that was the only way his family could survive during this difficult time.
