On July 2, 2020, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya faced intense scrutiny over the viability of his pet program, Linda Afya ya Mama na Mtoto, which provides financial support to mothers and their children after delivery.
The Auditor General's office had raised concerns over the delayed payment of Ksh. 269 million to 30,000 mothers identified during the 2017/2018 financial year.
Oparanya, however, assured the Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee that the mothers had since been paid.
Under the program, mothers are entitled to receive Ksh. 2000 every three months until the baby is one and a half years old.
Despite Oparanya's assurances, the Senators expressed concerns over the late disbursements, questioning how this would help in fighting malnutrition and high mortality rates in the county.
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu is set to appear before the same committee on Friday.
