On July 1, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta cautioned leaders against exploiting the National Hygiene Programme, also known as the Kazi Mtaani Initiative, for political gain.
The Head of State emphasized that the project, which had been allocated Ksh10 billion, was a personal initiative aimed at protecting the country's most vulnerable people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"This is not a process of trying to get votes for any person - not an MP or any MCA. This is a process of protecting the most vulnerable people in our country during this particular period. I will follow this very closely," he stated.
President Kenyatta further urged National Government Administration Officers to ensure that funds channeled towards the program are used effectively, as he pledged full support for the nationwide youth initiative.
The Kazi Mtaani Initiative, which will be launched on July 6, 2020, aims to provide a form of social protection for workers whose prospects for daily or casual work have been disrupted by the containment policies put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Currently, enlisted workers from Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa earn a daily wage of Ksh653.10, while workers from all other municipalities earn a daily wage of Ksh600. Payments are made once a week through mobile money transfer.
