Abel Xavier, a former Liverpool full-back, has predicted that the new Champions League format will produce a surprise winner. According to Xavier, the unique environment and lack of fans will level the playing field for smaller teams.
Speaking to Stats Perform News, Xavier said, "Yes, I think from my analysis of what I've seen with surprising results that have been happening in the [domestic] leagues, there is an extra buzz with the top teams because of the fans." However, he believes that the lack of fans will reduce the gap in quality between top teams and smaller teams, making games more competitive.
Xavier pointed out that teams not used to playing in the final stages will be more strong mentally and play more freely, which will make games more competitive. He added, "For that reason, I honestly believe that it is going to be difficult and there will be a surprise in the end."
The former Portugal international also expressed his hope that the Champions League conclusion will be a fitting reward for those who have worked hardest during the coronavirus pandemic. He praised Portugal's efforts in managing the crisis and said, "Portugal is one of the countries that has managed the crisis very well. I think when you look at the impact, now things are becoming better, I think it's a safe place [to play football]."
With the Champions League mini-tournament set to take place in Lisbon, Xavier believes that the event will attract a positive image for Portugal and showcase the country's ability to organize big events.
