Kenya COVID-19 Fund Delivers First Batch of Locally Made PPEs to Hospitals

On July 2, 2020, the Kenya COVID-19 Fund Board, in partnership with Equity Group Foundation, handed over the first consignment of locally manufactured Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi Hospital Infectious Diseases Unit.

The consignment, valued at Kshs 3,191,370, included essential items such as disposable gowns, surgical masks, N95 respirator masks, nitrile gloves, head/hair covers, shoe covers, and gumboots.

Earlier, Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital had received its first consignment of PPEs valued at KShs 3,822,080. The distribution and last-mile delivery of the PPEs were handled by Fargo Courier, an independent logistics service provider.

Speaking during the handover, Chairperson of the Kenya COVID-19 Fund Board, Mrs. Jane Karuku, assured that the funds received at the Board were being utilized effectively through a governance structure that includes independent auditors.

Equity Group Chairman, Prof. Isaac Macharia, handed over the PPEs to Kenyatta National Hospital CEO, Dr. Evanson Kamuri, in a ceremony witnessed by the Kenya COVID-19 Fund Board and Equity Group Foundation.

Dr. James Mwangi, Chair of the Health Committee of the Kenya COVID-19 Fund Board, expressed delight at the last-mile delivery of the PPEs, stating that the medical supplies value chain was taking shape. He also announced that the Board had embarked on procuring the second batch of PPEs worth Ksh 400Million to sustainably equip frontline medical workers.
