Kenya has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, with 268 people testing positive in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 6,941 since March 13.
According to the Ministry of Health, the country has registered close to 7,000 cases, with an average of 222 cases per day in the past week alone.
Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman warned that tough times are ahead as the COVID-19 peak inches closer, attributing the spread of the virus to laxity by a majority of the population in adhering to containment measures.
Out of a sample size of 2,704 tested in the past 24 hours, 259 Kenyans and nine foreigners tested positive, with the youngest being a one-year-old and the oldest being 80.
The new cases are distributed across various counties, with Nairobi having the highest number of infections at 175, followed by Mombasa with 28 cases.
As of July 2, 2020, 20 more patients were discharged from various hospitals, bringing the number of recoveries to 2,109.
Unfortunately, three more deaths were reported, bringing the total number of fatalities to 152.
The Ministry of Health has warned that there is an increased risk of death from COVID-19 for people with underlying non-communicable diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.
