Published on July 2, 2020, Kenya is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, with a high number of infections recorded since last week.

On Thursday, the country reported 268 new cases, bringing the total caseload to 6,941, following a record 307 cases on a single day the previous day.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Rashid Aman attributed the new cases to 2,074 samples tested since Wednesday, with 20 more patients discharged, raising the number of recoveries to 2,109.

“The battle ahead is tough, but our country has the determination, solidarity, and tools to flatten the COVID-19 curve,” Dr. Aman said, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to data and public health interventions.

The new cases include a one-year-old and an 80-year-old, highlighting that the virus does not discriminate on age.

Dr. Aman urged the public to maintain social and physical distancing, wear face masks in public places, and avoid social and political gatherings.

Unfortunately, fatality cases rose to 152 after 3 more patients succumbed while undergoing treatment.

With the peak projected for September, medics have warned of a surge in numbers in the coming weeks, which may dash hopes of re-opening schools.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to issue new measures on July 6, reviewing the current night curfew and cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera counties.
