As Kenya prepares to ease COVID-19 restrictions, the Council of Governors (CoG) has presented proposals for the re-opening of places of worship, with a focus on preventing the spread of the virus.

On Thursday, CoG Chief Whip and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana met with religious leaders at Ufungamano House to discuss the proposals.

Among the measures proposed by the CoG is a ban on crusades and overnight prayers, also known as 'Keshas.'

The CoG has also recommended the use of contactless payment of tithes and offerings, with churches adopting Safaricom's MPESA service and bank account numbers.

During services, the CoG has suggested the use of pre-recorded devotional songs and a ban on using holy water, sandalwood paste, and touching holy statues.

Churches will be required to provide handwashing facilities, clean running water, soap, paper towels, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant for each service.

A sanitizing station must be set up near the door, and transportation arrangements or ushers will be in place to ensure individuals leave immediately after the service.

Under the new guidelines, priests and pastors conducting the Holy Communion will be required to disinfect their hands while giving the communion, and congregants will respect physical distancing.
