On December 8, 2019, a 26-year-old woman braved the rains and walked home after reporting that her husband was forcing her to take abortion pills to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. However, her journey took a tragic turn when she was stopped by a person who identified himself as Police Officer Rodgers Ouma from the Lamu station.
Ouma, who was in a position of authority, offered to help the woman and even offered her shelter from the rain. The woman, trusting him as a person in authority, agreed to walk with him. But little did she know, she was being lured to his house at Langoni Police Lines, where he would commit the heinous crime of rape.
On July 2, 2020, Lamu Principal Magistrate Allan Temba found Ouma guilty of rape and abuse of his position of authority as a police officer. The Prosecution, led by Eddie Kaddebe, proved to the court how Ouma had lured the woman to his house and committed the crime.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, the court heard that the woman had gone to report her husband's actions, but instead, she fell victim to Ouma's deceit. The court's verdict is a testament to the fact that no one is above the law, and those in positions of authority will be held accountable for their actions.
