Former ATP players' council head Vijay Amritraj has expressed disappointment in Novak Djokovic's handling of the ill-fated Adria Tour, which led to COVID-19 cases among participants.
Amritraj, a 66-year-old television pundit, told Reuters that while Djokovic's intentions were 'absolutely correct', he could have taken more precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved.
Amritraj, who held the same post for four terms from 1989, emphasized the huge responsibility that comes with being a leader in the tennis world, citing the influence of players like Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.
He suggested that the Adria Tour debacle showed that there should be no crowds if the main circuits restart in August after a gap of five months.
Amritraj acknowledged that the absence of crowds would affect the players, but believed it was a necessary sacrifice for the greater good.
On December 29, 2018, Djokovic had reacted during the final against Kevin Anderson at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
