Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director Benard Njiraini has been arrested by officers of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Thursday morning.
The arrest comes after the EACC issued a notice to Njiraini under Section 27 and Section 66 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act No. 3 of 2003, which he failed to comply with.
According to the EACC, Njiraini's failure to comply with the notice has frustrated the timely conclusion of the probe into alleged procurement irregularities and payment of bribes in respect of awards for tenders for used motor vehicles, mobile equipment, and spare parts by KEBS.
KEBS implemented the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) program to ensure the safety and quality of imported goods, but questions have emerged on the quality of imported goods during Njiraini's reign.
Njiraini was appointed as KEBS managing director in August last year, taking over from Bernard Nguyo, who held the position in an acting capacity.
