On July 1, 2020, a COVID-19 patient escaped from the Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital, leaving authorities scrambling to recapture him.

The patient, who had been arrested for robbery with violence, had been tested for COVID-19 while in custody at Tinderet Police Station and was found to be a carrier of the virus 24 hours later.

Due to the positive test result, his arraignment at Kapsabet Law Courts was postponed, and he was taken to the isolation facility at the Nandi Hills Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

However, in unclear circumstances, the patient managed to break free from the hospital, despite being handcuffed and being under the watch of four police officers stationed at the facility.

Locals in Tinderet are now concerned that the patient, whose destination remains unknown, could infect unsuspecting residents.

Nandi Hills East OCPD David Nyabuto confirmed that a search operation has been launched to recapture the patient, who poses a health risk to the community.

According to Nyabuto, the patient likely used an unguarded route to escape through one of the isolation facility's windows.
