On July 2, 2020, Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) Managing Director Bernard Njiraini was arrested by officers of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) amid investigations into allegations of bribery at the State corporation.
Mr. Njiraini was taken to the Integrity Centre for questioning, marking a significant development in the ongoing probe.
The arrest comes after criticism of Mr. Njiraini's appointment as Kebs MD on August 30, 2019, by then Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya.
Activist Okiya Omtatah had questioned the appointment, alleging that Mr. Njiraini was 'handpicked' and that the process was marred by favouritism.
However, Mr. Njiraini defended the appointment, stating that it was not based on coincidence or favouritism, but rather on 'public documents' obtained in accordance with the Constitution.
