On Thursday morning, EACC detectives arrested Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Managing Director Bernard Njiraini for frustrating graft investigations at the parastatal.

According to the EACC, Njiraini was arrested for refusing to give original documents related to multimillion-shilling tenders that the commission is investigating.

The arrest was a penal consequence of failing to comply with a notice issued to him pursuant to Section 27 and Section 66 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act No. 3 of 2003.

The EACC has been investigating allegations of procurement irregularities and payment of bribes in respect of awards for tenders for provision pre-export conformity of goods, used motor vehicles, mobile equipment, and spare parts by KEBS.

On June 18, the EACC had asked Njiraini to supply them with 15 sets of documents needed to conduct investigations, including tender advertising notices, bank tender documents, all bids submitted by the bidders, tender opening minutes, list of bidders, and individual tender evaluation score sheets.
