With the rise of shipping container homes, it's no surprise that people are looking for creative ways to repurpose these structures. In this article, we'll explore how to turn a shipping container into a lively space.

Published on July 2, 2020, by Michelle Langi, this article provides a step-by-step guide on how to convert a shipping container into a functional and stylish home.

First, you'll need to obtain the necessary permits, drawings, and site survey. You'll also need to ensure that your container has proper port clearance documentation and did not ship any radioactive substances.

Next, you'll need to prepare your terrain by flattening it out with a bulldozer. Containers are self-supporting structures, but they can rest on a slab foundation. If you decide to build a foundation, an excavator will dig out the land to expose monolithic slabs that will support your container's structure.

A structural engineer will help with the technicalities of setting up the right foundation for your structure's needs. You might need to hire a concrete mixer truck to speed up the foundation process. During this stage, you'll also tackle underground plumbing plans.

Once your foundation is cured, you'll hire a crane to lift and place your containers in place. Next, you'll remove floorboards and connect plumbing, sewerage, and aeration vents. Then, you'll seal, insulate, and replace the floorboards back in place. Windows, openings, and doors come in next.

Containers take their strength from the continuity, so once cut, you'll need to reinforce them for strength. Work with fabricators while referring to your architectural drawings. After fabricating, your container is now ready for interior works, which include insulation, flooring, partitioning, room designing, cabinetry, and lighting.

Just because it's a container doesn't mean you can't go all out with the finishes. With a little creativity and planning, you can turn a shipping container into a lively and functional space that meets your needs.
